living in a world of mash-ups and remixes

life is complicated. music has become even more complicated. there isn't just 1 version of each song anymore (no, i am not talking about the regular version and then the instrumental version that cassette tapes use to provide in the 80s & 90s), i'm talking about the mash-up, remix, featuring, with, cover crazy crazy world of music. move over mixtapes and cover bands, the mash-up DJs are taking over. starting with DJ AM (i'm sure he's not the first, but he has become the most mainstream via nicole richie)--his mash-up that i hear constantly is Nelly's 'country grammar' sauced up with Lynryd Skynryd's 'sweet home alabama.'

i think the #1 mash-up DJ right now is Girl Talk. Mixing close to 30 songs in one mash-up masterpiece, mixing rap, alternative, power pop, adult contemporary, some 80s classics - he basically read my skitsophrenic playlist and made them flow like bone thugs 'n harmony busting out 5,000 words per minute. Night Ripper tracks is unreal, and is ideal for "name that tune." i dare you to try and name all of the songs before the next one gets mashed up into the mix. Girl Talk right now, only does small club venues or house parties, try to catch him before he becomes the next DJ AM and you have to pay $30 cover to see him in Vegas or LA.

beyond Girl Talk is the new group of bands or remixers, coming out with their own stuff, as well as leaking numerous tracks on the internet of some of your favorite songs with sometimes better sounding beats than the original track. some of my favs right now (i say right now, because it changes weekly, monthly of what's my favorite) are 25 hours a day remix of Phoenix's 'long distance call,' Jacques Lu Cont's Thin White Duke Mix of Gwen Stefani's '4 In the morning,' treasure finger's remix of Fergie's 'glamourous' (the flossy, flossy), Snowden's cover of Fleetwood Mac's 'dreams,' mstrkrft's remix of Justice's 'D.A.N.C.E.,' and Lily Allen's cover of the Kaiser's Cheif's 'oh my god.' (most of my resources for finding new tunes, remixes and covers are: stereogum - good weather for airstrikes - kissatlanta - indie christoph - idolator - shameless complacency - check 'em out!)

back onto my soap box made out of tape players - mash-ups are never ending, covers (with cover bands everywhere too) will continue to recycle and one day someone will say they're doing a cover of Dixie's Chick's cover of Smashing Pumpkins 'Landslide' and not even realize that back in the day (before i was born), that it was originallt written and played by Fleetwood Mac. wow that was a mouthful. i want more mash-ups and remixes, the more the merrier my music collection is. i get bored of the same thing (i.e. radio and even internet radio repeats!) and these help my music ADD.(the real O.G.'s of 'landslide')

where will music go beyond the covers, mash-ups and remixes?
